Sanford Stadium was built into a natural valley in the middle of the University of Georgia campus in 1929, which is why the field sits well below the surrounding walkways and the bowl feels enclosed despite being open at both ends for most of its history. The privet hedges that ring the playing surface are the reason the phrase 'between the hedges' means this stadium and no other.
The campus setting is the point: the walk to the gates goes past academic buildings and the crowd arrives on foot from all sides rather than from a ring of car parks. Autumn afternoons in Athens are warm and the bowl holds the heat. The band sits in the lower west end.
The lower bowl sidelines are close and the field is below you from the first row, which gives a better angle than the same row would in a flat-built stadium. The upper decks on both sidelines are steep and tall; their front rows read the whole field cleanly. The end zones are lower and more open — cheaper, and the view straight down the pitch is decent because there is nothing overhead. The corners of the upper sidelines are the value seats.
