Tiger Stadium — Death Valley to everybody who has played in it — began as a horseshoe with dormitory rooms built into the stands and grew upwards on both sidelines over eight decades. The south end was closed and double-decked in 2014. It is a steep, vertical, almost claustrophobic building, and that geometry is the whole point.
It is a night stadium. Kick-offs after dark in Louisiana humidity, with the crowd stacked nearly vertically over the field, are the reason this place has the reputation it has. The tailgating on campus starts a day early. Anything you have read about the noise is about a night game; an afternoon game here is a different, quieter building.
The lower bowl sidelines are close and the rake picks up quickly. The upper decks on the west and east sides are the tall ones and they are steep enough that the field stays fully readable from the very top — the trade is that the top rows are a long way above the play. The closed south end is the newest structure, with club seating and a straight view down the field. Corners are the value seats, as almost everywhere, and here they also catch the sound from two directions.
