The Sun Bowl is cut into the side of the Franklin Mountains and parts of its stands are blasted out of rock. It opened on 21 September 1963, cost about two hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars and was designed for thirty thousand; the 1982 expansion of the east side and north end took it to fifty-two thousand, its historic peak, and it holds rather less than that now. Note that the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl is the name of the bowl game, not of the building — the game itself dates to 1 January 1935 and has been played here since 1963.

The setting does most of the work: a Bhutanese-style campus, the Franklin Mountains behind one side and, through the open south end, a view out over El Paso and Ciudad Juárez. A new Daktronics board went in before the 2026 season, thirty-three and a half feet by sixty with four and a half times the resolution of the one it replaced, and 2026 is UTEP's first year in the Mountain West. Chihuahuan desert September brings heat and monsoon storms; November nights are cold. Alcohol sales stop at the end of the third quarter.

One concourse runs the whole way round the ground with a second, upper concourse on each sideline. The west side has the press box, given a second level in 1969, and the premium built with the Foster family's gift in 2020: four suites, twenty-six outdoor lodges, five hundred and two outdoor and a hundred and four indoor club seats and a twelve-metre outdoor bar. The east side was enlarged in 1982, as was the north end. The SOUTH END IS OPEN — no stands at all, just the scoreboards and a standing view from the concourse. Most of the ground is backless bench and cushions are hired at the gates.
