Toyota Center opened in 2003 in downtown Houston, a block from Discovery Green and connected to the city's tunnel system. It replaced the Compaq Center and was designed as a basketball-first building — the Rockets are the primary tenant rather than one of two — with a bowl of about 18,000 and a full renovation of its clubs and technology through the 2010s.
Being basketball-first shows in the geometry: the bowl is symmetrical, the tiers are angled at the court and the sightlines are consistent around the ring. Lower level sidelines are the reference view; the club rings flatten the angle; the upper level is steep and its corners see both baskets cleanly. There are fewer surprises here than in a shared hockey building — the level you pick is most of the decision, and the corners are consistently the value.
