Gainbridge Fieldhouse — Conseco Fieldhouse when it opened in 1999, then Bankers Life Fieldhouse — was deliberately built to look like an old Indiana high-school gym scaled up: brick, steel trusses, a barrel roof and a north wall of glass. It is widely considered the best basketball-specific building in the league, and a three-phase, $360 million renovation ran through 2022-2024 without ever moving the team out.

Being basketball-first is the whole point: the bowl is tight, the rake is steep and every level is angled at the court rather than compromised for hockey. The lower bowl sidelines are excellent and the baseline sections are unusually good here because the ends are close in. The balcony is high but the building is small enough that even the last rows read the game; the front rows of the upper sideline are the value seats. The glass wall means the north end has a different feel in the afternoon.
