The Stadium of Light opened in 1997 on the site of Wearmouth Colliery, replacing Roker Park, and holds 48,707 — the largest ground in the North East and one of the biggest in England. The name and the Davy lamp monument at the entrance are both deliberate references to the pit that stood here. Rail seating is being added in parts of the Roker End and the south-west corner for 2026-27.

Unlike most English grounds of its age this one was designed as a single continuous bowl, so sightlines are unusually consistent and there is no obviously bad side. Two tiers run all the way round. The North Stand, still called the Roker End, is the home end; the West Stand along the touchline carries the largest upper tier and the main hospitality. Because the bowl is regular, the decision here really is just height against price rather than one stand against another.
