The Etihad was built as the City of Manchester Stadium for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and converted for football afterwards by digging out the running track and building an entire lower tier below the original ground level — which is why the front rows sit so close to the touchline. The expanded North Stand, renamed the Pep Guardiola Stand, was used at full capacity for the first time on 24 May 2026 and took the ground to roughly 61,500.

Following completion of the expanded North Stand — renamed the Pep Guardiola Stand and first used at full capacity on 24 May 2026 — the Etihad holds roughly 61,500 for 2026-27, up from 53,400. Manchester City has not published an exact final figure, so no precise number is claimed here; the 52,900 and 53,400 still circulating are pre-expansion.

A continuous bowl with two big ends and two two-tier sides. The South Stand gained a third tier in 2015 and gives the most elevated view in the ground; the new Pep Guardiola Stand at the opposite end is the newest seating and the part of the map nobody has a memory of yet. Along the sides, the second tier at mid height is the cleanest angle. Note the geometry quirk: because the lower tier was excavated below ground level, the first few rows are extremely close but see a flattened pitch.
