COTA opened in 2012 as the first purpose-built F1 circuit in the United States, and its defining feature is the 41-metre climb into the blind, off-camber left-hander at Turn 1. The lap then borrows deliberately from Silverstone's Becketts, Hockenheim's stadium section and Istanbul's Turn 8.

COTA has the most deliberate spectator design of any modern circuit: a grandstand at the top of the Turn 1 hill, a large main stand over the pits, a tower, and a natural amphitheatre in the Turn 12–15 stadium section. Turn 1 is the marquee view — you look down at 20 cars braking uphill on lap one. The stadium section gives you multiple corners from one seat.
