Wembley is a bowl, and an unusually pure one: three continuous tiers all the way round with no corners cut off, and a roof carried on the arch outside the building rather than on pillars inside it. The stadium opened in 2007 on the footprint of the 1923 one and holds 90,000 for football. Turn it into a concert and the room stops being symmetrical, because the pitch becomes the floor and the stage goes at one end — and from that moment the difference between two seats with consecutive numbers can be the difference between the front row and the far corner. Where to sit: Wembley, from the stage outwards

Everything else here follows from one measurement: the stage is at one end, not in the middle. On this plan the stage element sits about 152 map units west of the centre of the seating bowl, hard against the west end of the floor, with the word STAGE written down it. So the room has a front and a back, and the spread is brutal: inside the lower tier alone, the furthest section is about six times further from the stage than the nearest.

The floor — seven named areas

The floor is drawn as seven named areas rather than numbered blocks, and the names are the map’s own. CIRCLE and DISCO are the pair against the stage, measured at about 76 and 77 units from it — the closest anything gets in this building — with KISS and SQUARE behind them at about 147. FRONT STANDING NORTH and FRONT STANDING SOUTH run down the two long sides at about 130, and REAR STANDING is the block at the far end of the floor, at about 246 — further from the stage than most of the lower tier. All seven open a panorama, which is the only honest way to judge a standing ticket: where you end up is decided by when you arrive, and the back of the floor is not the front of it.

100 Level — sections 101 to 144

Forty-four sections, the ring at floor height, and the widest spread on the map: from about 57 units at the sections flanking the stage to about 348 at the far end. 133 and 134 are the nearest seats with a number on them, with 132, 135 and 136 just behind; 109 to 115 are the furthest, straight down the room from the stage. That is a six-fold range inside a single tier, and it is precisely what a flat seating chart hides. Every one of the forty-four opens a view.

200 Level — sections 201 to 252

Fifty-two sections, the middle tier, running from about 100 units at 238 to 242 beside the stage to about 402 at 212 to 216 at the opposite end. The trade here is the usual one and it is worth taking at Wembley: enough height to read the whole production, close enough down the sides that the screens are a bonus rather than the show. Along the flanks this tier beats the back half of the 100s on distance as well as on angle.

500 Level — sections 501 to 552

Fifty-two sections, the upper tier, from about 130 units at 538 to 542 to about 440 at 512 to 516. These are the furthest seats on the map and also the ones the numbering misleads people about most: a 500 beside the stage is closer to it than a 100 at the far end. The front rows along the sides are the value pick of the building. All fifty-two open a view.

Getting to Wembley Stadium

Wembley is one of the best-connected stadiums anywhere, which is just as well for 90,000 people. Wembley Park (Metropolitan and Jubilee lines) is the main way in, down Olympic Way to the steps at the south end; Wembley Central (Bakerloo line, plus London Overground, Southern and London Northwestern rail services) comes in over the White Horse Bridge; and Wembley Stadium station runs Chiltern Railways trains to and from Marylebone. Three stations, three directions, and the sensible move after a show is to pick the one the crowd is not walking to. Driving is discouraged and parking is pre-booked and limited. It is an open bowl with a roof that covers the seats but not the pitch, so a layer is worth carrying even in August.
