Soldier Field is the smallest of the big American stadiums and the most peculiar-looking: the 1924 colonnades still stand, and the modern seating bowl was dropped inside and above them in 2003, so the tiers lean in over the floor rather than standing back from it. The practical consequence for a concert is that the room feels closer than its capacity suggests — an upper-tier seat along the side here is physically nearer the floor than the same seat at most of the stadiums on this leg. It is also on the lakefront, which decides the weather and the walk in.

Where to sit: Soldier Field, ring by ring

Where the stage goes decides everything else, and on this plan it is the middle of the room. Measured, not assumed: the stage element is a small square whose centre falls within about a dozen map units of the centre of the seating bowl, with the general-admission floor laid around it. So no section faces the back of a set, and what changes from seat to seat is distance and height rather than angle.

The floor — one general-admission area

The plan puts the floor down as a single general-admission area around the central stage rather than as numbered blocks. It opens a panorama like everything else, and that panorama shows you the honest version of a floor ticket: flat ground, very close, and a view that depends on when you arrive rather than on what you paid.

100 Level — sections 101 to 155

Forty-four sections, a complete ring around the floor, and the closest seats with a number on them. The spread within the ring is about half again from the nearest section to the furthest — the two long sides are nearer the middle of the room than the two ends, which is the usual stadium geometry. With a central stage every one of the forty-four faces the show, so the choice here is purely about distance and about which concourse you would rather queue on.

200 Level — sections 202 to 256

Forty-eight sections, the middle tier, and at Soldier Field this is the tier that benefits most from the way the building is put together: the bowl leans in over the floor, so these seats gain height without losing much distance. For most people it is the best balance on the map between seeing the whole production and still being able to read the stage.

300 Level — sections 301 to 356

Forty-nine sections, a full ring, and the point at which distance starts to cost you detail: the furthest of them sit roughly half again as far from a central stage as the nearest. The front rows along the sides are the value pick of the building — at this stadium the upper tiers hang close enough that you look down into the room rather than across it.

400 Level — sections 422 to 447

Twenty-five sections, and unlike the three rings below it this one covers one side of the stadium only. That is worth knowing before you buy: a 400-series number here does not mean what it would at a symmetrical bowl, and the geometry is best settled by opening the section and looking. The lettered areas — A, B, C and D

A hundred and thirty-three further areas in four families, grouped along one half of the building and sitting at and beyond the radius of the 300 ring — so they are the outermost part of this plan. Getting to Soldier Field

The stadium is at 1410 Special Olympics Drive on the lakefront, just south of the Museum Campus and about two kilometres from the Loop — which makes it one of the easier American stadiums to reach without a car. CTA bus routes serve the Museum Campus directly, the Red, Orange and Green lines stop at Roosevelt about a twenty-minute walk away, and Metra Electric and South Shore trains stop at 18th Street and at Museum Campus/11th Street. Parking on site is limited and sells out for big events, and the lakefront path in and out is the pleasant part of the evening. It is open air: dress for the lake rather than for the city.
