Where to sit: State Farm Stadium, from the stage outwards

One thing about this map decides everything that follows: the stage is at one end of the building, not in the middle. That is measured, not assumed — the stage element on the plan is a tall, narrow rectangle sitting a long way east of the centre of the bowl, and the 100 ring runs from 101 round to 137 and then simply stops, leaving a hundred-degree arc with no sections in it at all. That empty arc is the stage. So there is a front and a back here, and how square you are to the stage matters as much as how far away you are.

The floor — blocks A to K

Ten lettered blocks in two columns of five: A to E nearest the stage and F to K directly behind them. The gap between the two columns is bigger than it looks on the plan — on our reading of the geometry the back column sits a bit over twice as far from the stage as the front one. Within each column the middle block is nearest: C in front, H behind. And unlike most concert maps, all ten open a 3D view.

100 Level — sections 101 to 137

Thirty-seven sections in a horseshoe that wraps the floor and stops at the stage. This is the ring where the spread is widest of anywhere in the building: 101 and 137, the two sections that end the horseshoe alongside the stage, are about a third of the distance of 123, which sits dead opposite it at the far end. Nearest is not the same as best here — the sections beside the stage are close but severely side-on, and the ones a third of the way round are the first that are both near and square to it. All thirty-seven open a view, so this is a comparison you can make yourself in about a minute.

200 Level — sections 201 to 248

Forty-four sections, the middle tier, and the one most people end up happiest with: high enough to read the whole floor layout in one look, low enough that the stage is still the show rather than the screens. The same geometry applies as below — the ends of the ring are nearest and the middle of the far side is furthest, by roughly two and a half times — but the tier’s height flattens the difference, because from up here you are looking down into the room rather than along it.

400 Level — sections 401 to 455

Fifty-five sections, the upper ring, and the furthest seats on the map: from the section nearest the stage to the one directly opposite it the distance rather more than doubles. These are the value seats, and at this stadium that argument is stronger than usual because the upper tier is brought in tight over the lower one rather than set back from it. The ROH positions — ROH401 to ROH455

Fifty-one further positions whose ids shadow the 400 ring, so they sit at the top of the building alongside it. Getting to State Farm Stadium

The stadium is at 1 Cardinals Drive in Glendale, about twenty kilometres north-west of downtown Phoenix — a point worth making twice, because a great many listings file this venue under Phoenix and people book hotels accordingly. There is no rail link to the stadium itself: the Valley Metro light rail does not reach it, so almost everyone arrives by car or rideshare and the site is built for that, with large surface lots around the building and the Westgate Entertainment District next door for before and after. Leaving is the slow part, and the lots nearest the exits empty last.
